Unlike fine-grained hematite (Morris et al., 1985), coarsely crystalline hematite with grain size >5 μm is colored gray and has distinctive absorption bands at visible and near-infrared wavelengths (Sherman and Waite, 1985) that are absent from the spectra of ferric-bearing bright regions on Mars (Lane et al., 2002b).
Detailed comparison of the TES hematite spectrum and laboratory spectra indicate that thermal oxidation of magnetite is not a likely process for the formation of the martian hematite regions. Instead, a process involving low temperature dehydroxylation of goethite is proposed.
